To fans of (fan) art who this may concern…
Reblogging images from around the web is one thing, but slapping your tumblr’s URL onto an image you didn’t make is another. DobeTemeLuv has been doing this. I asked them why a few days ago, asking them to please reconsider (even suggesting the text read “shared by [URL]” at the very least, which they had been doing previously). I haven’t received a response and more images have been reblogged with just their tumblr’s URL on them - however, they have started linking the images to their proper sources, which may or may not be a result of my inquiry.
While that’s an improvement, putting a URL on an image sends mixed signals about its origin and I believe it’s a practice that should be nipped in the bud, “shared by (URL)” text and all. As someone who’s received a bachelor’s degree in art, I know a bit about the hard work that goes into creating art - yes, fan art is a form of art - and it bothers me to see it labeled like this. I don’t think it’s right. Frankly I think it’s a tacky way to advertise a blog. If you agree, if you appreciate fan artists, I urge you to leave comments in the ask box on DobeTemeLuv or any other blog you see attempting this, expressing your distaste for their actions. Unfollowing such blogs might help send the message too.
